WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday attributed attacks on Saudi oil facilities to Iran, a day after the Pentagon blamed Tehran for them but left open the possibility of more U.S. military action.
Pompeo has offered a tacit admission of responsibility for the drone and missile strikes, which Washington and its allies have said were likely carried out by Iran, despite Tehran’s denial.
The attacks on the kingdom’s oil industry, which could have knocked out 5 percent of global oil supply, have added to strains between the two longtime foes and threaten the world’s biggest crude market.
“The U.S. government does believe the attacks against Saudi Arabia were launched by the Iranian regime,” Pompeo told Fox News.
Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter, said the attacks knocked out five percent of its oil production capacity. It also said it could not rule out attacks by Iranian proxy forces.
Pompeo, who leads the U.S. State Department, said that a U.S. cyber attack on Iranian cultural sites in June could have set off the attacks, and urged the country to stop cyber attacks against the United States.
“We call upon Iran to cease its cyber campaign, which is only designed to cause chaos and mayhem and divide communities,” Pompeo said.
Pompeo declined to say whether he believed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had approved the attacks, but said: “He certainly wasn’t surprised by it.”
Pompeo also said on Tuesday that U.S. military forces are in position to respond militarily to any threat to the U.S. and its interests in the region.
